Keyword Engine — finding the right terms
How we surface keywords, what the metrics mean, and how to build the topic clusters your content team will actually brief from.
Keyword Engine is two tools in one: a discovery surface (find new keywords) and a clustering surface (organize the ones you have into topic groups your content team can plan against). Both live in the same view.
Discovery
Start from a seed term, a competitor URL, or an existing keyword in your project. The engine returns up to 50,000 related keywords per seed on Pro (1,000 on the free tool), each with volume, CPC, difficulty, intent, and parent topic.
Reading the metrics
- Volume — average monthly searches, smoothed over the last 12 months. An estimate, not a guarantee of clicks.
- Difficulty (KD) — 0-100 score. Below 30 = realistically rankable for most sites; above 60 = requires real authority.
- CPC — what advertisers actually pay per click. High CPC usually = commercial intent worth pursuing organically.
- Intent — informational / commercial / transactional / navigational, inferred from SERP shape.
- Parent topic — the umbrella query this variant clusters under. Use this for topic-cluster planning.
Clustering for content planning
Select 10-200 keywords and hit "Cluster." The engine groups them by SERP overlap — keywords that share 4+ of the top 10 results get clustered together. This is the right way to plan content, because Google itself treats those keywords as the same topic.
Cluster, then brief, then write
The right workflow is: discover → cluster → pick the cluster with the best volume-to-difficulty ratio → generate a Content Brief that targets the whole cluster (not just the primary keyword). One article ranks for 8-30 variants instead of just one.
Saving keyword groups
Any cluster can be saved as a tracked Keyword Group. Tracked groups get daily rank monitoring, group-level share-of-voice calculations, and alerts when any keyword in the group crosses a position threshold.
