Site Audit — what we crawl and how often

Crawl cadence, what we check, how to interpret the severity scores, and how to exclude paths you don't want crawled.

Site Audit is a full technical SEO crawler that runs on a schedule and surfaces issues by severity, type, and trend. It's the same crawler design as Lighthouse + Screaming Frog combined, optimized for continuous monitoring rather than one-off scans.

What we crawl

  • Every URL discoverable from your homepage + sitemap + internal links.
  • Up to 100K URLs per project on Pro; unlimited on Enterprise.
  • Each URL: HTTP status, headers, meta tags, structured data, internal links, image alts, canonical, hreflang, robots directives, page weight, Core Web Vitals (lab).
  • Sitemap.xml itself: parses every entry, validates against the spec, confirms each URL is reachable.

Cadence

Default: weekly, on whatever day you created the project. You can override to daily on Pro, or on-demand at any time. Large sites (50K+ URLs) typically run weekly because a full crawl takes 6-12 hours.

Severity tiers

  • Critical — broken canonicals, noindex on a page that should rank, 5xx responses, missing meta-robots on pages you don't want indexed.
  • Warning — slow LCP, missing alt text on hero images, redirect chains > 2 hops, soft 404s.
  • Notice — missing OG tags, oversized images, hreflang inconsistencies on multi-region sites.

Watch the trend more than the absolute number

Most sites have 100+ notices and that's fine. What matters is the delta — 12 new criticals appearing after a deploy is a signal to investigate. The audit page foregrounds this exact diff at the top.

Excluding paths

Project settings → Site Audit → Excluded paths. Accepts wildcards and respects your robots.txt by default. Common excludes: /admin/*, /preview/*, query-string filtered URLs that don't need to be crawled separately.
